How To Decorate a Small or Gloomy Apartment on a Budget....
Comments (2)Decorating a small apartment on an even smaller budget can be a tricky task. The goal is to create a living area that is comfortable, and enjoyable, while at the same time maximizing your space, and minimizing the amount of cash spent on the whole design project....See MoreI just squeezed a lot of new furniture into a very small room!
Comments (57)nancy-- thank you! And yes, so true . . .so fast! lazy-- I agree with everything you've said. Those things have bothered me as well. Most of the books sticking out I can't change, but someday I will (when the kids are older). I have been looking for larger pieces for the FP and other wall for a long time, ditto for what goes on the FP. Just too hard to find things without a lot of shopping trips to the flea market, and I rarely get to do that! The curtains will change eventually, too. Now I can go in a totally different direction with color, when I have the time and $! val, I see where you are going with the FP but there isn't enough room to do that (such a small room). If I can someday get an ottoman I will remove the table! amj, I will get that pic up for you soon. It does not really look built in though . . .it is nowhere near what I'd like it to look like in terms of how it is arranged, either. lori, thank you-- you rooms have always been very inspirational to me. flower, I would like the floor length idea but not sure how it would work with the chairs against the wall . . .no room to push them far enough out so that the curtains would not be smooshed. Ideas? Thank you again, everyone!!...See MoreNeed help organizing small apartment!
Comments (6)Your kitchen looks to be quite small with minimal storage space. If it were me, I'd look for a shallow cabinet or hutch with a couple open shelves as well as some nice closed storage space. Something that ideally would fit on the wall just outside your kitchen. I'd store kitchen pieces that I don't use every day in it, keeping the open shelves for art, a tv, music, pottery or other pieces that look best in your living room. I've seen old Hoovers similar to this (but without a sink and not as wide). If need be, you could paint it to work with your furniture. Turn the upper part into a bar/art display or whatever. Storing plates, serveware, pots, pans, flatware, bowls, etc. in the closed portions. I see this kind of cabinet a lot in consignment shops for fairly cheap. I might even frost the glass to give myself more places to store kitchen, work-related or really anything you need to store and have no room for elsewhere. Again, you could use open display areas for a bar , art, etc. so that to visitors, it would look kind . It would be even better if it had a pull-out desk top feature. I'd paint it black, perhaps. Here's another idea, but I'm thinking much smaller and moveable. Sorry, I'm searching for examples fast, but hopefully, you get the idea: Bottom line is something that will serve multiple purposes, including storage and display. Look at flea markets and consignment shops. And remember, just about any piece of furniture can be painted....See MoreMake small NYC apartment more interesting and homey
Comments (35)Cute apartment. A few ideas: Floor plant on one side of fireplace to bring some color on that side Sofa is small so don’t do too many pillows. 1-2 and a cozy throw for the NYC cold winters! Small round storage ottoman (on wheels or sliders) nestled by fireplace can be storage and pulled out for storage too (maybe something with texture ) Where do you eat? The types of coffee tables with a top that hinges up/out to become a table is a good idea. Someone posted upthread but West Elm and other box stores sell them. Rug- great way to bring in color (even if it’s subtle). Just make sure you get a size big enough but one that gues by impede movement of your office chair. It looks like you work at home a lot. Gallery wall above sofa would be nice. Current art is too small and high. Kitchen- looks clean! Add color with wood cutting board, colored teal kettle or bowl of oranges/apples, salt/pepper shaker. You also consider a series of art/prints in the wall above the cabinets. Can’t wait to see what you do!...See Moreelcieg
