foundation planting plans?
Comments (3)and wherever you go in your design .. double all distances ... IMHO ... a garden is to hide your foundation.... NOT TO BE PLANTED ON THE FOUNDATION ... i grew up in the 60's in a 50's subdivision ... they planted all these HUGE plants.. 2 feet from the foundation ... and the neighbors are still trying to get rid of them ... if it were me... i would make a 6 to 10 foot bed minimum ... and plant trees/conifers at least 5 feet from the house.. and not in a straight line.... when you go googling ... look and see if the pix that please you involve a 3 foot bed at the house ... i bet a buck.. they wont be ... so if you are thinking a 5 foot bed.. make it 10 ... and just drive or bike the neighborhood... and rate each garden you pass ... it wont take long for you to develop an eye toward what you want .... good luck ken...See MoreDimensions/layout of family room
Comments (21)Our family room in our last house was 14.5 x 22. It was a wonderful size. It was set up much like yours, but the fireplace was centered on the wall. We had slightly more room than you but here is what we had. . . I would center the fireplace on the wall - absolutely. The off center fireplace would bug me incessantly and would be very difficult to decorate around. If you can't fit a double french door, put a single. Put a large window on the other side. Have corresponding transoms on both (this is like ours and I am a symmetry nut but it never bothered me). I am attaching a link to our old house, which sold, but I think the pictures are still online. There are some ariel views of the family room. We were able to fit two very large leather club chairs, an ottoman, a sofa, a club chair and a bench, plus two extra benches beside the TV armoire. We could comfortably seat 8 in there and 10 in a pinch! You will have to flip through the real estate pics to see but maybe that will help you with furniture arrangement. FYI the passageway between the right bench by the armoire to the table is 24". Minimum recommended distance is 22". That was our main passageway into the master bedroom and it didn't feel tight at all. Here is a link that might be useful: Family Room...See MorePlan help needed before foundation is poured.
Comments (8)You'll are awesome! You have given me much to think about; thank you. I apologize for the confusing cabinet lay out. We DO have upper cabinets along the entire wall with the refrigerator and stove. We are absolutely considering enclosing the study in some way. We are unsure about simply bringing the ceiling and walls in to make an alcove OR doors. It is to be a place in which we will have the family computer and with four children we need to be able to see what they are doing. rhome410: I like the idea of deeper countertops; however, does that only work with a counter depth refrigerator? Again, we are a family of six and after seeing my folks refrigerator (counter depth) I know that size will not suit our needs. holligator: Is 18 inches overhang beter suited for the island? I agree, I think the prep sink should be moved as well. lyvia: There is no walk through space on the other side of the cabinets...actually the back of our couch will be by the cabinets. Things I don't like: Am I going to want to walk around the sink, dw area everytime I need to get something from the kitchen? It seems as though I am usually getting up several times throughout a meal to get somebody something. Also, if I want a second oven, where do I put it, and the same goes with the mw and warming drawer. I just don't know where to put them as far as function and looks are concerned. For me, function over form but I don't want an unbalanced kitchen either. Again, thank you for your time. Please keep the ideas coming!...See MoreNew home foundation pour in winter
Comments (7)Doesn’t seem like there are any other suggestions for questions to ask. I understand everyone is mostly on board with just trusting blindly and letting them go. I’m an engineer so I’m constantly asking why things are done a certain way and 100% believe in trust but verify. My nature has me always questioning things. I appreciate the input and attempts to build confidence. I think I’ll still ask some of these questions and the builder can answer or has his subcontractors answer them. I’m a curious person by nature....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
