Satin Brass & Antique Brass Lamps- outdated or still in style?
Comments (18)I would have put the lamps in my storage room (spare bedroom filled with 4 book cases and three 4-drawer putty cabinets) for extra lighting if they were very outdated. I guess I want my home to look nice as I am fixing it up. I like them too much to part with them and keep hoping one day to have a bigger place to have one more room to decorate. I still love the lamps but wish I had white lamps for my guest/exercise room but since these are still nice( bought them last year.... think September 2007), I will make do. SInce I bought the white wicker dresser in that room, I guess I was hoping to make it more white. Should I keep the lamps shades or get white ones? The cream shades really do go well with the brass lamp. I already spent so much on my new Durham Solid Wood Sand White finish bedroom set and now my new air conditioner/heating/compressor unit since my old one just died on me and caused a flood in my home two weeks ago. It was so expensive. I had planned to use the money for hardwood floors but now I can't do that for another year....See MoreFireplace screen for modern walnut-paneled wall?
Comments (8)Thanks for the opinions! Of course you all are picking the cheaper option, so I'm loving it! There are kids, of course...but I'm kind of banking on the layout preventing them from being directly in front of the fireplace while rough housing. mjsee - if the floor is tile, why do I need a hearth rug? I am honestly asking...I don't have much experience with fires/fireplaces, so I don't know what's required. One thought I did have was to get a pull-out tray below the grate to catch ash to try to keep the wall around it cleaner when we have to clean out the ash. jakabedy - you can see a little of the house in my clippings - it's a 50's ranch, not a MCM, but we tend to keep things pretty cleanlined. Thanks, guys! Deb...See MoreA take on modern brass - WSJ
Comments (9)I think any finish has a potential place in the right bathroom. Rubinet offers several whites, maroon, aqua and black. Newport Brass, Phylrich, and others offer 20 or more finishes, some of them. I like brass, but it has to be in right house, just like anything else. (Aqua?) Somebody must be using those, or they wouldn't offer them. There is more out there than chrome, nickel, (ORB, and brass). Maybe the safest thing to do is something that's rarely used. The question is, why does someone feel the need to redo fixtures just because they speak to a different era? I usually find the shape or style of faucets dates as much as the finish. (And all the "Victorian" or "Early 20th c." styles so common now are probably going to bug people as much in upcoming decades as the white acrylic knob on brass seems to bug people now.) People don't seem to talk about shapes that much....See MoreAre modern design wall mounted hot water radiators finicky?
Comments (46)My understanding is that boiler, pump and radiator reps often do a lot or all of the engineering calculations for boiler and radiator installations. I must be missing something because I don't understand this at all" Runtals use 1/4 of the water of Myson, so this justifies their higher price - you get it back in energy savings. A btu is a btu. The boiler makes it, the structure looses it. How it gets to the room from the boiler has little effect on efficiency provided the return water is the same temperature. Even if you have to put 2 or three times the electricity into pumping with an inappropriate piping/pump and maybe radiator system, it won't make that much of an impact. I can't say much about CI rad design with respect to internal water volume. Water carries the heat so flow has to be sufficient and transfer from water to metal and metal to room has to come out right. It really boils down to the rated heat output of the rad at a given temperature and the rate needs to maintain that given temperature. Cast iron baseboard need not be any more of a dust collector than the higher mounted Runtal rads and has the advantage of putting the heat low where you need it most and heat transfer will be maximized. Are you sure about that 40k calculation? Right now I am looking at heat loss calcs for a home about that size. It is 50 years old and, although the insulation and air sealing is excellent for a home of that vintage, it is only good overall. The calculation comes in at below 50k at a design temp of of 0F. My fuel use calculations, however, come up below 30k. I put more faith in the latter since there is guesswork involved in the energy rater's estimate.. The walls have insulation blown in, The ceiling is filled to over the joists and there are double pane windows. Exterior doors are good....See MoreDar Bouchaib
