Lighting in bedrooms with 8' ceilings
Comments (9)Should preface this with saying that I really dislike cans *except* in certain circumstances. I have 3 cans in 2 places and hardly ever use them. I'm sure contractors recommend them because they make more money by installing them. I think one needs to determine how a room will be used and how much lighting is necessary. There are 3 types of lighting to consider - general, task, and mood and they can come from different sources. IMO bedrooms don't need the same amount of lighting as, for example, kitchens. So, for me, 4 fixtures in a relatively small bedroom is totally unnecessary. Are you planning on having bedside lamps or lamps on a dresser? When we had this house built I chose to have wall sconces instead of ceiling fixtures installed in a number of rooms and I am very happy with them. I have 3 sconces in my bedroom for general lighting but rely only on table lamps for reading in bed. We had a switch installed adjacent to the bed so the lamps could be turned off easily which I find very useful. I also have a lamp on my dresser for mood lighting. I have 2 sconces in another bedroom, 4 in the LR, one in the stairway, and 2 in the dining area. The light from a sconce, depending on the chosen fixture, is less harsh than with ceiling light but still great for general lighting. We do have ceiling fixtures in other rooms as I thought 12 sconces were enough....See MoreDark bedroom with low ceilings and small windows - paint and carpet?
Comments (59)I like the last 3 - though still not what I'd do. Too much going on in them, and we tend to have too much clutter to add business to the walls. I wish I could keep things cleaner but we're fairly useless. Hopefully with these movements we'll be able to shed some crap. But I've been pretty bold lately... pained one room white (mascarpone) and teal... and we have a living room painted in mascarpone and cayenne, and the dining room is mascarpone and Adriatic (if I'm remembering properly - it's a deep blue). I think if we do something interesting with the closet doors (with color) then I'll leave the small wall white - but otherwise, I may paint. I'll leave the glass bricks open - that's the only "natural" light that comes into the bathroom....See MorePainting a small master bedroom
Comments (8)I am, also, of the opinion that a small room can be painted a darker color. What makes a light small room look smaller are the shadows in the corners. A dark color reflects less light blurring the edges of the room., By absorbing the light, "the walls of the room are less clearly marked and can give an illusion of more space." I would consider removing the crown molding, as it is one more thing defining the size of the room. Is there a light in the ceiling? Often a semi-flush up light gives the feeling of height....See Moremaster bedroom with vaulted ceiling
Comments (18)You could add horizontal trim at the top of and against the 8' part of the wall over the row of windows and the same height all around the room. You could paint the wall and trim and ceiling all the same color or use that horizontal trim board to make a distinction between the wall and ceiling colors. For decorative purposes, you could simply ignore the area above the horizontal trim or on the wall above the headboard of your bed, create a single deep box wall to wall box shelf about a foot square just beneath the trim board. Whether you leave that shelf open or add solid doors or glass doors depends upon what you want to add/store there. One idea, depending upon your headboard and personal taste, might be to create that box shelf across the wall EXCEPT directly above the bed, adding only a top horizontal board there, and then paint the wall between the top board and floor behind your headboard so it is your favorite bold color as an accent wall in an otherwise neutral colored room, with or without vertical trim boards, depending upon your headboard and how you want to "frame" your accent wall or just...See Moreelcieg
