Comments (2)Costs are coming down dramatically but these systems are rarely used as the sole fuel source for heating. While its entirely possible to largely supplement a new homes heating with solar, existing homes are just too inefficient(drafty and poorly insulated). I would recommend weatherization and checking out the DSIRE site for incentives available in your area. If the "electric" heat is in the form of a heat pump, I probably wouldnt change or add infrastructure but there are many variables to consider. Comments (26)It'll take a bit of time for all institutions to get around to getting these letters out to everybody with a HELOC. But, sooner or later, everybody's going to get one if they're in a Designated Declining Market. stellar1: "I could max out the line and still be well below what my home is appraised at with the county." What your home is appraised at with the county is probably not relevant. Municipal tax assessments are, in the vast majority of jurisdictions, not representative of fair market value. Assessments are performed on some routine time frame...every 10 years, every 6 years, every 4 years, & a very few reappraise annually (expensive so most munincipalities don't do it frequently). So, depending on which direction the market is moving & when your last assessment was performed there can, and usually is, a large difference. Then, to further complicate the issue...the majority of jurisdictions do not tax on the full market value. The assessed value is usually some percentage of FMV. For example, here in CT it's 70% of FMV. Also, if you read your HELOC documents I'm certain you'll see that your lender has retained the right to pull the line of credit whenever there's a material change & a decrease in the value of the underlying collateral meets the definition of "material change". It's highly unlikely your lender has done anything illegal. Of course you have to pay for the appraisal. It's your loan & your property. I'm glad you got a another loan that meets your needs. Somewhere in the fees and/or rates you are paying for an appraisal for your credit union's use also. Again, it's not the lenders who are driving these HELCO pullbacks. It's the agencies' underwriting. Consumers shouldn't have to wait until they have been ripped off in order to be able to protect themselves. Ed Mierzwinski, U.S. PIRG consumer program director said it well. "The three credit reporting agencies oppose credit freezes because they think consumers' credit information is their product to sell. They make money every time they sell your information to banks, mortgage brokers, car dealerships and other retailers. Of course they don't want consumers to have control over their credit files; it takes away their bread and butter." It seems that the credit bureaus could care less how many people are being ripped off so long as they can keep making money. I think what the credit bureaus are doing is a racket. Definition of the word racket, "A business that makes money by selling a solution to a problem that it created (or that it intentionally allows to continue to exist), specifically so that continuous purchases of the solution are always needed." In this case the "solution" is the credit monitoring services they charge us for. We get to pay them to see who they sold us out to. They are making money coming and going but we are the ones paying the price when it falls into the wrong hands. I really don't mind waiting a couple days for a freeze to be lifted in order to apply for a mortgage, credit cards, etc. I'd rather do this than worry about who is buying my information for ill gains. I think it is better to keep the barn door locked before the horse escapes. Not try to fix it after the fact. Comments (2)Now I only freeze tomato and cantaloupe seeds in the hope to kill them and will not become volunteer plants. Unlike pumpkin seeds, cantaloupe seeds break down easily. Most of my worm food is juice pulp from root to leave veggies, my own and from a friend, whose co-workers do a collective juicing at work. Based on my observation and reading posts and comments, I decided not to feed the worms fresh scraps/food. Besides, I collected more pulp than the worms could consume. Before storing/pre-rotting in 3 gal. buckets with lid, I mixed in crushed/powdered egg shells. I did notice that with time, there will be gas built up when the stuff start to age. My take, this is what will take place in the worms' intestine when they consume (too much) fresh stuff be it the juice or food particles, rather than the MO they were supposed to slurp: gas build up, which will cause them (the worms) to explode and look like SOP (string of pearls). Another thing with pre-rotting, I can discard (or not) the liquid pooling at the bottom of the bucket to reduce moisture in the bin. But this can be done when you thaw frozen scraps too. When feeding my larger bins, I lately put the food in egg cartons (doubled up) in the hope to protect the worms from generated heat and they come and feed when ever they feel like it. And the egg carton get shredded when next feeding comes. I feed the bigger bins quite heavy and so far no problems....See Morejrb451
