Schonbek crystal chandelier advice
Comments (8)BUMP So we found a beautiful chandelier locally- Trilliane. Incredibly pretty. The sales person and owner of the small local lighting company told us that it is similar to the much larger version of Trilliane that he placed in his new home. He had a Spectra model on the showroom floor. It is the correct size for our dining room. However, he stated that he saved up for three years to buy the Elements model for his own home and he suggested that for the money it was worth delaying the purchase and waiting to come back and buy the Elements version if our budget allowed. His price is extremely good, but still ridiculously expensive. Can anyone comment on whether the coating on Elements crystal is that much more brilliant and refractive than Spectra? Really looking for some assistance here. It's a big purchase. Thanks!...See MoreCan you spot an expensive chandelier?
Comments (26)Thank you, writersblock, for including my shop and pics in this forum! I'm flattered... Well, I've seen very pricey chandeliers that didn't look all that expensive, and rich chandeliers that weren't all that expensive (like mine!) As everyone pretty much mentioned, the quality of the crystal has everything to do with a chandelier. Austrian (Strass) crystals are the finest quality and carry a hefty price. Behoemian/Czech crystals are also fine quality, but Swarovski is noted for superior optical quality. If you look at My Gallery page in my shop, you will see a French Empire chandelier that I designed with Swarovski crystals in the Gold Teak color. While the beauty of the crystals on this fixture brought tears to my eyes (I become attached to the chandeliers I build :) ), the crystals alone cost over $1,000.00. I use a lot of vintage crystals in my fixtures, and have found that many of the prisms are on par with Swarovski ~ I believe it has much to do with lead content. Vintage prisms work well in my wind chimes designs, because they sound so beautiful (again, lead content and glass quality). I also use Italian and Czech crystals because they are good quality, they sparkle, they are durable, and they are affordable. I do use Swarovski crystals, but sparingly due to the price. Unless a client specifically requests Swarovski, the chandeliers I have custom built are dressed with European and Czech crystal. Whether you choose Schonbek, Crystorama, or a custom fixture from Sheri's Crystal Designs, you are getting a great chandelier!! Thanks for letting me chat here!! Comments (16)Sapphire69, thanks for bringing up this topic. I use a weak solution of mild soap and water, rinse with clear water, and dry with a paper towel. Through all these years no harm done. The real PITA to me is the tiny individual wires which spread open here and there to catch the drying towel I am using. Microfiber cloths might help with that to reduce catching. For years I've puzzled over how to solve this problem -- glue the wire ends together? Use a tiny sodering iron? (Does one exist?) If someone could solve this problem I'd be forever grateful. Schoolhouse, zowie!!! that is some chandelier!!!! Love it, but I'd never want to be the one to clean that baby. I'll think of you the next time I'm tempted to grumble while cleaning mine.
