I just saw this at a garden center and have been dreaming about it. im so torn because i hear its a terrible bush to grow both in health and vigor. BUT the bloom on it was just so WOW. ugh!!! love that coloring!!

I’ve only been to the San Diego portion of California. I had no idea your area had BS. As one travels from SD to Sacramento, where does blackspot first begin to be a problem? And do you know if BS pressure by you is similar to that here on the East coast?

That's a beautiful bloom, Carla. I'm really getting excited about orange, and the rose for me is Double Easy Orange, which I've blabbed about all over the forum for a year. It's an exclusive from J&P, and bred by Tom Carruth, one of my favorite rose hybridizers. This little rose is a very continuous bloomer, and bloomed for months, even though it had barely been planted as an bare root. I don't think I've ever seen a rose take off so fast. Mine is grafted, but it's available own root, which Jim is currently growing. His plant, grown in Pennsylvania, looks great. Mine is ready to start blooming soon. Up here in Idaho, the blooming starts in late May and early June. Diane

My entire rose growing experience I've always had black spot, and as I've said elsewhere I didn't realize there were roses that had pretty green leaves year round until recently (because of what I've seen on Houzz.)   So it's not really a quandary for me-- it seems normal for Roses to not have green leaves, or even to lose all their leaves. 

I really only worry about it if I think the Rose is going to die from it.

When I look at pictures I look at the Roses, not the leaves, which I realize some of you see it differently.

Carla, I'm an orange rose person, and I was excited to get Vavoom when it came out. I loved the blooms, but hated the plant (mine was a bush, not a standard). It's impossible to describe how weirdly awkward it was, plus it was stingy in the extreme. But I'm glad you're still sorta appreciating it :-D

Carla yours definitely looks orange! i lnow it has a bad rap but glad you’re enjoying it too. I have Vavoom and so far it’s been quite good for me. Last year it got rust but so did every rose I have…very wet cool spring. It was a band so it’s been growing slowly and finally put it in a bigger pot and it’s shot up. It had a decent spring flush considering it’s pretty young. My camera captures more red in it I think than there really is.

Another “definitely orange” rose is Burst of Joy. Lovely color and mine is grafted so it’s pretty tall and bushy but the orange fades to pink more quickly than Vavoom.

Wow! Burst of Joy is a phenominal color. I have a brand mew Vulcano but no blooms yet to compare

I thought Vavoom was really pretty. I keep eyeballing it at the High Country Roses green house.

But I already have 3 orange roses. My favorite is Fred Loads due to the brilliant color and how tall it gets. In the picture it is 8.5 ft tall and 3 yrs old. We have it tied to a trellis. It is not cane hardy for us in zone 5 so it starts from the ground every year.

My husband's favorite of all our roses is Livin' Easy. He likes the color gradient that makes it look like it is glowing.

We also have Denver's Dream. It's positives are that the flowers age very nicely on the plant and they don't attract Japanese Beetles. I wish it had more of a solid bush form but that may be due to my letting it grow how it wants and not shaping it. It is also in partial shade.

Above All is being taken out this year. It was supposed to be a climber but is just a bush for us. Last year:

So now it looks like this. It has gone to a home that wants a smaller bush and not a climber.

Other orangish (?) roses

Abbaye de Cluny,  Golden Opportunity and my adored little Trader Joe's Minis who are troupers through heat, cold and wind and keep blooming even though they have no leaves!

Carla, I like Easy Does It ever so much. I used to grow Abbaye de Cluny way back in the day, but gave it away during one of my rose culls, which I probably shouldn't have done, since I really like the Meilland Romanticas.

Susan, I've grown Abbaye de Cluny for about 18 years, and think it's a wonderful rose. It's coloring is a lot like Just Joey's, as I'm sure you know. The blooms are huge and continuous. I like the Meilland Romanticas, too, especially Rouge Royale. Can't you find anyone selling Abbaye? I liked Easy Does It, too, but it mysteriously started declining years ago, and I removed it. I've always thought I should try it again. Diane

Easy Does It....again. Just looking at these old pics makes me want to grow it again.

Diane, I think I got Abbaye de Cluny in 1998 or '99. But I did a big rose cull around 2006 when I hit 375 roses. I eventually got down to ~200, but I'm now back up to ~260, so it can be hard to decide what to add. Or maybe I should say, hard to resist :-D
