Cereus monstrose 'Ming Thing'- Do you own one?
Comments (57)What my favourite is is thirds of sifted top soil, Turface MVP and granite chips, but those aren't always easily available, so the screened-for-large-bark-chunks potting soil, cut with half perlite, is usually something that's pretty easy to acquire. I have a British cactus book from the 1950s that list 27 different recipes for cactus mix, depending on the genus of cactus grown, but that's I think going off the deep end (however, reading it is fascinating!)....See MoreDo you do your own painting, or hire it out?
Comments (39)If there's any way we can afford to, we'd prefer to hire it out. Our cutting-in always looks like s*** because neither of us has steady hands (the one lingering aftereffect of DH's bout with Graves' hyperthyroidism is hand tremor, even though he's been in complete remission 10+ years), and I fizzle out way too quickly with repetitive motions like rolling. We painted (and otherwise half rebuilt) our porch this summer and it was pretty miserable. We have a friend rather like Tuesday's, kind of a jack-of-all-trades, who moved back to this end of the state after a few years away and will likely be helping us with a bunch of stuff as the budget permits, and he's agreed to try to teach DH some honey-do kind of things. He's a major hippie with a taste for the ganja (but never while working) - he's slow but quite picky about his work, and thankfully he only asks $15/hr plus materials from friends. He and I put in a lot of hours together working on the master suite-lette in the other house....See Morelosing things in your own house?
Comments (57)One time I had placed all of my heirloom jewelry in a velvet bag and stuffed it into the space down beside a loveseat cushion (you know where you always lose things in your furniture). We were going on vacation, having house sitters and I just wanted to be sure no one would find the jewelry. I don't think I worried as much about the house sitters because I trusted them, but wasn't sure how much they'd actually be home and worried more about burglars. Some time later (I didn't wear the stuff much), as the loveseat was loaded onto the back of someone's truck to be donated, I somehow remembered the jewelry! Whew! Recently, even though I have a specific place where I always take off my earrings, I had taken them off to go to a swim class, so put them in the middle of the wooden steps going up to my bedroom/bath where I keep my jewelry. I knew I'd see them and take them to their "spot" when I went up after swimming to take a shower. These are my favorite 25 year old silver disk earrings with antique beads - I wear them a LOT. When I next went to wear them, they were gone. Nowhere to be found. I looked in every little spot I might have tucked them into but no luck. I was kinda sure they were somewhere, but I'd looked everywhere I could imagine and re-looked probably a dozen times. I'd go to bed thinking about them, where could they be, and wake up thinking about them, where could they be? Then one day, I thought to look in the pocket of one of the robes I sometimes put on at home after showering when I swim. There they were. I'd put on the robe, swooped up the earrings from the step and plopped them in the pocket to take upstairs but forgot to take them out of the pocket. I'm much more deliberate now with where I put them. eta (because my post just wasn't LONG enough lol) I always put my keys in the fridge when I want to remember to take something from the fridge with me when I leave. I used to shop on my lunch hour at work and would put the groceries in the fridge along with my keys, so I'd remember to take the groceries home with me. Until everyone in my office finally had searched for the dummy who left their keys in the refer, did they get used to seeing them there....See MoreDo you do your own nails? Wear polish?
Comments (41)Nope, no professional nail treatments for me, either. Way back, when I was young, I often wore polish on my fingernails, and occasionally on my toes if I was wearing sandals. I've worn only athletic style shoes for almost 40 years now, so nothing but necessary clipping of toenails. And fingernails I trim as needed while watching TV. Have any of y'all tried a glass emery board? They are great for leaving a smooth edge on your nails, it's all I use now. When I was young (and slim) I always wanted long fingernails. I have no idea why, it was just sort of 'the thing to have', I guess. But no way my nails would grow, they chipped, split, broke, anything but grow long. Probably because I did so much with my hands. But now that I am older, and have no desire for long nails, they grow long, strong and fast! But I keep them just a tad longer than the tips of my fingers. Anything longer is just a nuisance! Rusty...See Moreeld6161
