CT Frost Warning
Comments (33)Well, sorry. I have lived in Connecticut for over 12 years. I have many friend over there who do gardening. The expected spring frost date is mother's day for southern CT. It is usually better by the sound. But inland can get worse. So this should be no surprise. Here in GA, North Atlanta area we are expecting 41F tonight. Not quite near frost but very unseasonable. I have a suggestion for you to protect your plants: 1- If you have lots of leaves, pack around and over your plants and cover them with tarp or blankets etc. 2- In liue of leaves, get a lot of newspapers, separate them sheet by sheet and crumble them into fluffy balls and use them to pack around your plants,so that the air will be trapped and the weight of tarp will not damage the plants. Frost is not so bad. All you have to do is prevent cooling by radiation. But if you have freez, cold air will penetrate even through tarp and blanket. If you have just a few plants, you may cover them with empty pots. I would put a layer of newspaper inside them, for more protection....See MoreFrost Warnings for Tonight
Comments (8)My hubby and I were seduced by thoughts of Spring, and planted sone things too early! He lost a dozen tomato plants in the frost, along with a few other things we were silly enough to put in the ground. Oh well. . . good thing he started backups. On the bright side, the natives I've been transplanting and starting from seed all seem unperturbed. The most dramatic example were some wild violets I transplanted into a difficult exposed location days before the frost. They were entirely unaffected by the frost, blossoms included....See MoreFrost Warning Tonight - October 19, 2014
Comments (1)Those geraniums look very grateful to have been rescued while they're still healthy. We have a Frost Advisory here on the Eastern Massachusetts coast, per the NWS: "A frost advisory is issued when frost is expected to develop during the growing season. Those with agricultural interests are advised to harvest or protect tender vegetation. Also...potted plants normally left outdoors should be covered or brought inside away from the cold." The last of my houseplants came in about a week ago so everything still out there is on its own. I did transplant some foxgloves and a mullein last week that had rooted themselves in a gravel path. I think they'll be OK. The bareroot Sanguinaria canadensis (single bloodroot) are safely underground - I'm hoping they'll naturalize. My bulb order from Brent and Becky's bulbs is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow so the timing should be good. Claire...See Morefrost warning tonight
Comments (11)It's getting really cold and I decided that I was not going to be robbed out of most of my first crop of super hots - which are in a little uninsulated greenhouse. I had two kerosene lanterns going to try to circulate a little heat in there and it worked sorta okay - raised the temps by 5 F. Soon that 5 won't stave off the frost so I flipped down to Lowes in Amherst yesterday and brought back a natural gas heater. It's hooked up now to the gas line and is performing quite nicely. I may have trouble getting it to a low enough setting so might be running in and out cycling it myself. Yeah, now those peppers are worth a bazillion dollars each... I can only plead insanity - but just think how early I'll be able to start in the spring!...See Morelindalana 5b Chicago
